For a long time, I never gave my dishwasher detergent a second thought. If my dishes came out clean, I assumed it was getting the job done.
Now, as I have started the journey of creating a healthier, lower-toxin home, I realized that what I washed my dishes with mattered just as much as what I cooked my food in.
Many conventional dishwasher detergents and rinse aids contain ingredients like synthetic fragrances, dyes, preservatives, and harsh surfactants. While these products are designed to rinse away, some researchers have raised questions about whether tiny residues left behind on dishes could contribute to several health effects.
Damage to the cells that line your digestive tract, potentially contributing to increased intestinal permeability, commonly known as "leaky gut".
Gastrointestinal distress such as indigestion, stomach upset, and diarrhea.
Endocrine disruption, potentially interfering with hormone production and health over prolonged periods of exposure.
The research is still developing, but it was definitely enough to make me seek out an alternative!
For me , switching to a non-toxic dishwasher detergent was an easy change that fit with the rest of my journey toward a more intentional home.
Why I Made the Switch
I wanted to avoid unnecessary synthetic fragrances.
I prefer products made with simpler, more transparent ingredients lists.
It was one more small step toward reducing everyday chemical exposure in my home.
It gave me peace of mind knowing the dishes my family eats from are cleaned with ingredients I feel better about.
I don't believe you have to replace everything overnight, it can be very overwhelming! In fact, I think small, sustainable swaps are the best way to create lasting habits.
If you're just beginning your non-toxic journey, dishwasher detergent is one of those simple changes that takes almost no extra effort once you've made the switch.
Your home doesn't have to be perfect to be healthier, this is something I have to remind myself all the time! However, every small change adds up over time, and this was one of the easiest swaps I've made.
One simple swap often leads to another! After switching our dishwasher detergent, I also started using a non-toxic dish soap, and it just made sense. It's another everyday product that comes into contact with the dishes we eat from, and choosing a cleaner option gave me even more peace of mind. Remember, you don't have to change everything at once, one small step at a time is enough!
