One of the very first non-toxic swaps I made in my home was laundry detergent. It can be very overwhelming to try and deep dive headfirst into a fully non-toxic household! That is why I have found that making small changes, even just one simple thing at a time, can make all the difference. This recipe is so simple, you can be ready for your next load of laundry in just 5 minutes!

Why Make the Switch?

  • budget-friendly compared to store bought options

  • fewer ingredients/simpler formulas (you know exactly what is in it)

  • less plastic waste

  • lasts for months

Only 5 Simple Ingredients

  • 3 cups of washing soda

  • 3 cups of baking soda

  • 1 cup of epsom salt

  • 1 cup coarse sea salt or kosher salt

  • 20-25 drops of essential oils (optional)

Supples You Will Need

  • measuring utensils

  • large bowl for mixing

  • airtight storage container

  • scoop or spoon for finished product

How to Make

First start out by measuring out 3 cups of washing soda. I like to use the Arm & Hammer 55 oz box. This will last you for 2 batches or if you want to make a double batch! Then add in 3 cups of baking soda, 1 cup of epsom salt, and 1 cup of salt. Mix all of the dry ingredients together thoroughly and you are done! If you want the extra sent boost, you can then add 20-25 drops of your preferred essential oil (I like to use a citrusy cent for a bright pop of fragrance!) and combine again thoroughly. Store in an airtight container to keep it free from moisture, causing clumping, and smelling fresh! Some good options are containers made from food-safe plastic, glass, or coated metal. I use a wide mouth glass jar for a cute and sustainable option!

How to Use

You only need 1 to 2 tablespoons or scoops per regular load of laundry, adjusting slightly based on load size or soil level. That is one reason why I love this recipe so much! Place the powder directly into the washer drum while filling with water and before putting in your clothes, then proceed like normal!

A Few Extra Tips!

  • If you are looking for a natural fabric softener that also brightens colors, breaks down detergent buildup, and neutralizes stubborn sweat or mildew odor grab some distilled white vinegar. A super easy non-toxic swap that has many other uses around the home! Use 1/4 to 1/2 cup for a standard load of laundry, and place directly into your machine's fabric softener dispenser. For top-loaders (without a dispenser) wait until the rinse cycle has filled with water, then add directly to the drum!

  • Try out wool dryer balls for a reusable and chemical-free dryer sheet alternative. A single set can last for up to 1,000 loads of laundry!
